Chile Creates Marine Reserve Around Sala y G�mez
In a monumental victory for the oceans last week, Chilean President Sebasti�n Pi�era announced the creation of a no-take marine reserve of 150,000 square kilometers around Chile�s Sala y G�mez island. Sala y G�mez is an uninhabited and scarcely explored island that may be one of the last relatively pristine places remaining in the ocean. The new park expands Chile�s total marine protected area more than 100 times, from 0.03% to 4.41%.
